¡Viva La Vida! ¡Viva México!

First, I have to say that I do love Coldplay’s new album, but I have a little problem about what’s going on with the title and cover artwork from a cultural and historical perspective.

“Viva la Vida!” is Spanish for “Long live life!”, and it was the famous title of Frida Kahlo’s last painting before she died in her childhood home, which is actually right here in our neighborhood in Mexico City. What’s the famous French painting “Liberty Leading the People” by Delacroix doing up there on the cover?

For what it’s worth, here’s the real context to the reference. ¡Viva la Vida! ¡Viva México!

I’m a very amateur painter, and don’t enjoy looking at still life paintings. But this one of the watermelons is actually the only still life I’ve ever seen that I REALLY LIKE. Thank you for showing it to me! (I’ve never seen it before; it’s only now in your blog entry I’ve seen it.)

Yeah I usually don’t like still lifes either. And, this unfortunately is not one of Frida’s best. She was in a lot of pain and on lots of drugs before she died and the paintings she produced in her last few years aren’t as crisp and colorful as her others. But it still makes you want to take a bite into that watermelon, doesn’t it? 🙂 Thanks for visiting! I can’t wait to check out your site.
